Apple iPhone X liquid damage recovery.

Can this Apple iPhone X liquid damged from sea water be recovered? Its going to be a challenge but we will attempt to at least recover the data for this customer. At Gadget Rehab – High Wycombe we pride ourselves in being different from the competition by having the expertise to take on some of the most challeging electronic repair tasks. Have you got any challenges for us?

Most of us have been there, our original Apple lighting cable comes to its sad end. Now you must decide whether to buy a genuine Apple iPhone, iPad, iPod charger. You know you can buy a copy charger from the market for £2.00-£6.00. Below is a breakdown of the two to help you make a better decision next time you are put in this predicament.

By using a counterfeit Apple charging cable you could be putting your device at a risk of damage. These risks can include;

  1. Battery Issues
  2. Cable may break more easily
  3. The connector end may become very hot
  4. Connector end may not be a good fit into your device
  5. May not be able to sync the device via USB
  6. PCB on board issues with your charging circuit.

The above are a few issues with using fake or uncertified Apple Lighting Cables. Another big issue with using uncertified Apple charging cables is that they can cause harm to the Motherboard (Logic Board) of your device, this is due to a similar issue as to why these fakes cause battery issues. The problem that causes many of these risks is that these copy lightning cables are unable to control the current being fed into the device. What this does is drown the internal components of the device with a surge of excess voltage/current.

For the battery this means unlike an original Apple lighting cable the fake will keep putting full current to the battery when charging, where as an original charging cable has a regulatory chip built in which will lower the current as the device hits 100% leaving just a small amount to hold the battery at 100%.

The same principle applies when looking at the damage caused to PCB/motherboard. As this power surges through the board it can begin to cause damage to the charging circuit. The most common chips that tend to go are U2 (Tristar) or Tigris

Spot the difference

There are many differences between an original and copy lighting cable. These come in many forms from the variation in size of the end of the cable to stickers on the packaging of the boxes.

  1. The place of production will be written on the cable followed by a 12 digit serial number.
  2. The width of the end of the cable will be variant from the 7.7mm of the original.
  3. The plate of the charger will be a black or off white compared to the originals metallic/silver.

The above are a few of many differences between an original and fake Apple charging cable.

Here at Gadget Rehab we provide Original Apple Lightning Cables as well as the older 30 pin cables. For your iPhone, iPad and iPods. For Android users we also have Micro USB and USB Type C cables.

Many of us have experienced the ‘too hot’ sign on our iPhones, here are a few tips on how to bring the device temp down;

  1. Remove the case - I know this may be obvious but it really does have a great impact on decreasing the temp.
  2. Avoid leaving it in the car - cars get very hot as sunlight heats up the car through the windows.
  3. Similarly keep the phone out of the sun - direct sunlight can overheat the phone.
  4. Avoid any unnecessary usage - don’t play games etc.
  5. Turn off bluetooth - the bluetooth even though it is small does have some heat radiation.
  6. Turn off location services - again even though minor can have an effect.
  7. Avoid charging - until the phone has cooled down don’t attempt to charge it as charging increases temperature.
  8. Put it in a cool place - in extreme cases of overheating you may put your device in the fridge or freezer for a couple of minutes.

If your phone does regularly over heat it can be due to a faulty part, don't hesitate to bring your device into Gadget Rehab and our technicians will have a look to see if they can diagnose the issue. It can be due to many variables, e.g. battery servicing required etc.

Many people don’t realise their consumer rights when it comes to manufactures warranty!

Gadgets in today’s world generally have a warranty between 1-5 years, depending on the product. What this warranty gives you, the consumer,is the right to go back to the company of purchase or manufacture if you have any manufacturing faults or defects with the product.

Manufacturers have been known and have a tendency to void your warranty for reasons they are not always permitted to do. A common reason for manufactures voiding your warrant is third party repairs. Now in some cases this makes sense, for example if you get your motherboard replaced and then follow to have a motherboard issue, however in many cases you could have a screen replacement and then when you have a completely unrelated issue for example a battery problem they will still void your warranty. But is this really right...

Gadget Rehab advises you have read of this article titled: “what really voids your warranty”. You should also read your manufactures terms and conditions and contact them should you have any concerns or need further clarification.

Google Pixel Repair

For the past 5 years Gadget Rehab have done repairs on all types of  devices, not just Apple or Samsung devices like some other companies within the industry. An example of this is last week one of our techs Dan B completed his 50th repair on a Google Pixel.

Issue - Charge port

Task one of any repair is to diagnose the issue - in this case the customer had brought the device in with charging issues.  Dan, firstly conducted a series of tests on the charge port and battery using a USB tester to determine if it was the battery or charger port. Dan, also tested the battery and the daughter board (controls all charging aspects of the phone) He found that it was a short not accepting voltage, the technician came to the conclusion that replacing the part was the best way forward.

The next step was to order the part - the technician then went to our trusted and tested suppliers and placed an order for a Google Pixel charge port.

Upon arrival of the part the technician got straight to work:

  1. Remove screen - one of the difficulties with this repair is that to access the area the screen needed to be removed - this isn't easy without breaking the screen and comes with risk.
  2. After removing the screen - Dan got to work on the repair and changed the faulty port.
  3. Post repair the device went through a thorough testing process
  4. Once it passed all the tests the customer was called to collect their device

The customer was very pleased with the overall service and the repair itself and Dan, was pleased to complete his 50th successful Google Pixel Repair.
